What is Social Media Marketing? Why Should We Do It?

tweeterSocial media marketing is something you will definitely need to do to promote your online business. If you want visitors as well as search engines such as Google to find your website, social media marketing will help with that.

Don’t worry, it’s actually not anything complicated! Social media marketing just means effectively using social media websites to get visitors to come to your website.

And don’t forget, marketing is also about advertising yourself and your brand. So even if every link you post is not to sell something (and it shouldn’t be), you can still be using social media to your good advantage.

Social media websites include:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • YouTube
  • LinkedIn
  • Google+
  • Pinterest

There are lots and lots of different social media sites and you can Google to find more, but I would say at least start with those I’ve mentioned, if you haven’t already. Those sites are the big ones! You will see the sites I’ve listed are very different from each other and therefore you might not use all of them the same way. For example, if you are only marketing information products by pasting links around the internet, and you have no pictures, you probably won’t use Pinterest, and that’s okay. If you have a fiction book you’ve written and you’re selling it on a website, you might find it difficult to come up with a YouTube video to promote it, but that’s okay.

But do use at least some of these. When somebody “shares” your Facebook post or “retweets” your Twitter post, for example, not only do those links bring visitors directly to your site, those links are also considered valuable by Google and other search engines, because the fact that they were shared shows other people have viewed your content as being useful. This will help your site to show up on search results.

Social bookmarking is a great way to get your links shared by others. You can sign up for a bunch of different social bookmarking sites, but start with one – like del.icio.us. You’ll enter a link to a page on your site, post a short description, and add some additional information. Others can see what you’ve shared. And then they too can share it. But you don’t want to be viewed as a spammer. You want to create a healthy mix of link posts – bookmark some sites that aren’t yours. Other beneficial bookmarking sites include:

  • StumbleUpon
  • Digg
  • Reddit
  • Technorati

Of course, although the concept of social media marketing is not hard to understand, the challenge will be for you to have an organized plan for carrying out your social media marketing. Most of my sharing I do through the “share” buttons on my own sites. I’m experimenting with some other tools too, so I’ll write about those later on.

Don’t get overwhelmed with carrying out your social media marketing. You don’t have to sign up for every social media site that exists! And even if you do open up a lot of social media accounts, you don’t have to publicize every single blog post you make with every one of them every time. In fact, I think it’s a good idea to mix it up. You don’t want to do your backlinking the exact same way every time (I’ll explain more about that later on).

So, for your further consideration, here’s an interesting infographic I came across:
